Nursery Admissions

Admission to Thorney Close Primary School Nursery is by application when your child is two years old. Applications must be made on the Local Authority form which is available from the school office. Forms should be fully completed and returned to school. As part of our school safeguarding checks we must see your child’s birth certificate.

Admission to  Nursery does not guarantee automatic admission to Thorney Close Primary School Reception (see Reception admissions for further guidance). Children are eligible to begin Nursery education the term after their third birthday (if there are spaces within our Nursery class) and are entitled to 15 hours education a week. We currently have a Nursery class which starts at 8.45am and finishes 11.45am, Monday to Friday.

Parents/carers who have completed a Nursery admission form for Thorney Close Primary School will be contacted during the term prior to their child starting Nursery with full admission details. Children and parents will be invited to meet our Nursery staff and visit school prior to starting so that parent and experience the Nursery environment.

Reception Admissions

Thorney Close Primary School follows the admissions procedures set by the Local Authority for admission into Reception classes. Admission to the Reception class is through application during the advertised application period. Further information can be found in the local authority Admission to Primary School Booklet below (click on the booklet).

Children who currently attend our Nursery class should receive a letter at the relevant time (usually in the September prior to the child being eligible to transfer to Reception) detailing how to apply for a Reception place. A place in Thorney Close Primary Nursery does not guarantee automatic admission into our Reception. Parents must complete the relevant Application to Reception forms during the advertised application period set out by the Local Authority Admission Team. In-Year school Transfer

If your child attends a school within the Sunderland Authority and you would like to transfer them to Thorney Close Primary School, there is a protocol to follow before the move can be approved.

In the first instance, you should meet with the Headteacher of the school your child is transferring from to advise that you are considering the move. You will be required to complete and sign a Pupil Transfer Notice, which will also be signed by the Headeacher. In the meantime, you are advised to contact us here at Thorney Close Primary School and make an appointment to meet with Mrs Jones to discuss your child's move and receive our own transition information. This will enable you to make an informed decision as to whether we are the right school for your child.

Once transfer forms have been received and we have spoken to the school your child is transferring from  will we then be able to verify whether there are spaces in the Year group you require.  You will be advised as to when the transfer can take place.
