"Where Learning Blossoms..."

Deaf Awareness Week

This week, we celebrated Deaf Awareness Week across the school. The children engaged in a variety of activities designed to deepen their understanding of the Deaf community and promote inclusive communication.

One of the highlights was a research project where each class explored the lives of Deaf role models. In today’s assembly, pupils shared what they learned about inspiring actors, athletes, and pioneers who have made a difference in the world. It was a fantastic way to showcase their learning and celebrate the achievements of the Deaf community.

Throughout the week, we’ve been celebrating in many different ways, always with the goal of making everyday life more Deaf-friendly for everyone in our school. As part of this, some of our students created eye-catching posters with helpful communication tips for interacting with Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.

Here are just a few of their brilliant contributions:

  • Fatima: "Deaf Awareness Week tip – use sign language to communicate!"

  • Isla: "When someone is lipreading, speak naturally – don’t exaggerate."

  • Cole: "Type your message on a mobile phone and show it – it really helps!"

  • Kaira: "Drawing things can help me understand better."

Deaf Awareness Week is about understanding the challenges faced by Deaf people, promoting equality, and making communication more accessible to all. It’s a reminder that small changes can make a big difference.

For those interested in learning more or accessing useful materials, there are wonderful resources available on the  including tips, activities, and information on how to support and communicate effectively with Deaf individuals.
