Free School Meals Changes from September 2026

We would like to make families aware of important changes to Free School Meals eligibility from September 2026.

The Government has expanded eligibility so that more children may now qualify for Free School Meals if their family receives Universal Credit, regardless of household earnings. This change could help many families save money while ensuring children receive a healthy meal during the school day.

If you:

  • Receive Universal Credit
  • Have a child attending a Sunderland school
  • And your child does not currently receive Free School Meals

you are encouraged to check your eligibility and apply as soon as possible.

Please note that if your child already receives Free School Meals, you do not need to submit a new application.

We have attached a flyer with further information and encourage all parents and carers to take a few minutes to read it. Even if you are unsure whether you qualify, it is worth checking as your family may now be eligible under the new criteria.

For more information and to apply, please visit: www.togetherforchildren.org.uk/free-school-meals

Don't miss out. Check your eligibility today and make sure your child is ready to benefit from Free School Meals for the new school year.
