Roker Pier

Despite the wet weather, Oak Class had a wonderful trip in the school minibus to visit the newly reopened Roker Pier following its restoration. For more than a century, Roker Pier and Lighthouse have protected the entrance to Sunderland’s harbour, with the pier and the lighthouse’s striking red and grey granite bands making it one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks.

The children were able to enjoy a walk along the pier and, with the tide out, even ventured down the steps onto the sands of Roker Beach. We found a sheltered spot to enjoy an ice cream—because what else would you have at the seaside? It was a fantastic afternoon away from school that also linked perfectly to the children’s classroom learning.

In the coming weeks, we plan to give all pupils across the school the opportunity to visit this iconic landmark.
