Read Write Inc.
Every Friday, we will send home a RWI book with your child. Where possible, this book should be brought to school every day so that given the opportunity, a school adult can also listen to them read too. Each book should be read each night for a whole week as the more times they read it, the more fluent they will become with the story and the key words. Inside each book are notes which will help you to support your child when they are reading their book with you as well as some words that your child can read to help with their speedy recall of trickier words. Each book can be read several times a week so they become familiar with the words and so they can develop their story language even further. Every time your child reads at home, please can you comment in their reading records for us so we can also see how the children are getting on with you too. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Our First Day
Don’t we all look so smart! We’ve had a lovely first day together and can’t wait for all of the amazing adventures we’ll have together this year.

Exploring Bulbs
This afternoon in Science, we investigated the different parts of a bulb using onions, learning about the tunic, scales, flower bud, and basal plate. 🧅
We had lots of fun exploring and discovering — even if the classroom ended up smelling very oniony afterwards

Division Discoveries
We’ve been exploring division using our 2, 5 and 10 times tables, confidently grouping numbers and writing our own equations.
Next, we’re excited to apply these skills to solve tricky problems independently!

Celebrating Eid Together
As Ramadan comes to a close, we enjoyed learning about how Eid is celebrated and tasting some delicious traditional sweets.
A lovely way to end a busy week—thank you to Miss Begum and the Miss Syedas for sharing this special experience!

Busy Hands, Brilliant Sewing!
The children have been working quietly and carefully on their sewing projects, showing great determination and perseverance.
From threading needles to learning new stitches, we can’t wait to share their fantastic creations!

Cricket festival at The Beacon of Light!
This afternoon we had a fantastic time at The Beacon of Light, exploring lots of cricket skills through fun games in our whistle-stop session.
From practising overarm and underarm throws to chasing wickets, everyone stayed busy—and went home happily tired!

Sculpture Creations
After our Sculptures Walk and visit to The Angel of the North, Oak Class have been busy creating their own relief sculptures and miniature Angel models. We can’t wait to share the finished, painted masterpieces with you later this week!

Investigating Materials with Greta and the Giants
This week we began reading Greta and the Giants, inspired by environmentalist Greta Thunberg and her mission to protect the forests. In Science, we tested different materials to find the best one for Greta to use as a greenhouse to help grow more plants for the animals’ homes.
We learned the meanings of transparent, translucent, and opaque, and investigated which materials would let the most sunlight through to help the plants grow. The children worked brilliantly as young scientists!

Yoga
Oak Class enjoyed a lovely yoga session. After stretching, we practised our balancing skills. It was lovely to see how much stronger we have become in our yoga skills.

Maths Symbols
During our Maths lesson this morning, we began to use the symbols <> and = to compare different multiples of ten. We used dienes to create each value practically and building each symbol using the lollipop sticks really helped us to ‘see’ the differences between each amount.

Geography
In Geography, we recapped our learning on the UK, the location of each country, the capitals and even the seas and oceans surrounding the island we call home. We spent lots of time exploring the atlases and working together to identify different features of the maps too. So much fun!

A Calm Monday
We ended our Monday with a very calming 30 minutes in Yoga with our teacher Nikki. Following on from our MyHappyMind work, we enjoyed stretching, balancing and practising our happy breathing even more in her session.

Historians
We became historians when we explored a range of inventions from across the last 200 years. Working in teams, we chronologically order a series of dates and then we’re challenged to add an invention to each year. We recognised that toys with batteries must be much newer than a teddy bear because batteries are a newer invention. It was very interesting listening to all of our reasons for ordering the different objects and we were quite shocked by how old some inventions actually are! Did you know the first biro was created in 1938?

Our First PE Session
We had so much fun with Craig practising our dribbling skills and aim. Our teamwork skills were really strong too!

Warm Up for Music
Friday is always a musical morning for Year 2! To make sure everyone was warmed up for our learning, we enjoyed practising moving to a three step beat using the scarves to add a little colour to our session.

The Human Body
We have worked together to recap and review the parts of the human body. Not only could everyone identify things like our calves and hips, some of us could even explain how different organs like our heart, lungs and intestines work. There are definitely a few doctors of the future.
