Kirkley Hall - Willow Mrs Chard - 20th June 2018

(33 images)

We have had an excellent time on our school trip to Kirkley Hall Zoological Gardens. We were split into three groups and each group had a guide. We got to walk around the zoo grounds and see some of the magnificent animals they had. We saw wallabies, meerkats, lemurs, bush dogs, donkeys and even some very adorable primates. We also saw lots of different birds such as macaws, lorikeets, geese and we also got to hold some of the animals. We also saw some reptiles, such as snakes, poison dart frogs, bearded dragons and some lizards. We were able to hold a hissing cockroach, a giant land snail and pet some very cute rabbits. We saw lots of different fish, even some lovely clown. Then we had a great walk into the woods to see if we could find any mini-beasts and to look out for some red squirrels.

Dinosaurs - Willow Mrs Chard- 25.5.18

(30 images)

We have thoroughly enjoyed our ‘Dinosaur’ topic. We have learnt lots of facts about dinosaurs. All of the children have enjoyed playing in the dinosaur museum, digging up bones, ordering them and reading words on bones. Mrs Jones found an egg in the sensory garden. She asked us to look after it as she didn’t know who it belonged to. Meg the dinosaur wrote us a letter to ask us if we had spotted her egg anywhere. Later in the week she came to school to collect it. As part of our topic we experimented with creating textured paint. We added things such as cereal and sawdust to the paint. When we painted pictures of dinosaurs it gave them a bumpy texture. During Maths we sorted dinosaurs according to colour and counted to see how many were in each set. We also estimated how many dinosaurs we could see and counted to check to see if our estimates were close. Our highlight of the topic was definitely when Bob the dinosaur came to school for his lunch. We all had a great time showing him our fantastic table manners and playing with him outside.

22nd November 2017

On Monday we had a visit from the school nursing team. We completed four different activities:

  • Knowing how to brush our teeth correctly. We had a go at using a big toothbrush to brush the giant set of teeth.
  • Knowing how to was our hands correctly. We practised washing our hands, remembering to rub our thumbs and between our fingers.
  • Discussing how to be good friends and how smiling and laughing helps to make us happy.
  • Knowing that exercise is extremely important. We completed some activities such as jumping up and down and completing action rhymes. Following this we used a stethoscope to listen to our hearts beating. We all decided that our hearts were beating faster after exercise compared to when we were resting. Joanne explained that we should try and complete one hour of exercise per day.

All of the children enjoyed the sessions and gained lots from the sessions!

10th November 2017

We enjoy singing songs to help us to remember our shapes. Follow these videos and links at home to practise.

The school follows the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum in Nursery.  The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets the standards for learning, development and care for children from birth until the end of the Reception year.

It aims to develop each child to their full potential by offering a ‘principled, play based approach to learning and development’. Young children learn best through play and Early Years Practitioners will be able to provide your child with appropriate play and learning experiences for their stage of development and help them develop new skills. The activities that are provided for young children will underpin the skills they need to work towards the Early Learning Goals at the end of their Reception year at the school. The EYFS curriculum enables practitioners to recognise your child’s strengths and areas where they need more support to develop new skills.

The areas of learning and development are broken into seven areas. Three areas are particularly important for igniting children’s enthusiasm for learning. These are the three prime areas of:

  • Communication and language
  • Physical development
  • Personal, social and emotional development

Leaving four specific areas through which the three prime areas are strengthened and applied.

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

All areas of learning and development are important and interconnected and many activities will cover many of the areas. Each area is divided into stages of development and practitioners are able to identify resources and learning opportunities for individual children dependent on their developmental needs.
