"Where Learning Blossoms..."

Year 1 2022-2023

World Book Day

Liz Million who is an illustrator and author of Children's book visited Thorney Close Primary School and helped us to create some fantastic work. Look at our amazing drawing skills!

Grace Darling

Wow! What a great day out we have had! The children have thoroughly enjoyed looking at artifacts in the Grace Darling Museum, finding out what is was like to live in a lighthouse all those years ago. Also we got to see the REAL rescue boat Grace and her dad used. Then we had an explore of St. Aidan’s church where Grace Darling is buried. We found out she was a Christian which is the religion we have been learning about in RE. To end our visit we lit a candle to remember Grace and those who would have been so scared the night of the rescue.

Amazing Attendance

Last week Oak class had an amazing 99% attendance, the highest attendance in school and so we got to choose a prize from the treasure chest. We were so close to 100%!

Leaf Art

We have been been exploring using natural materials to make patterns. We have done some leaf rubbings, we have printed with leaves and we have made our own natural repeating patterns outside.  We created some fantastic pieces of art!

2d Shapes

We have been exploring 2D shapes. We have named 2D shapes, we have made 2D shapes, we have found shapes in our classroom and outside, we have discussed how many sides different shapes have. We certainly are on our way to becoming shape experts!

Year 1 Oak 22 - 23 - 2d Shapes

We have been exploring 2D shapes.

Materials

We started a new topic in science - called ‘Materials’. It was wonderful to see how many materials the class already knew like plastic, wood, glass, paper etc.

Beebot Robots

We have had so much fun in our computing lesson using the Beebot robots.  We made them spin on the spot, constructed bridges for them to go through and even had race to see how close to the wall we could get without the Beebot touching it!

A Mysterious Box

On Wednesday, a mysterious box was dropped off to our classroom. We decided to open it and see what was inside. There was flowers, a doll, a picnic blanket, cakes and a wanted poster for the Big Bad Wolf.  Can you guess who the box belongs too by looking at the clues inside?

Old Toys

We are still looking at toys in our history lessons. This week we had a great lesson discovering and experimenting using old toys. Some were different to they toys we have today and some were actually quite similar!

Exploring Primary Colours

In Art, we are exploring using primary colors - red, yellow and blue. We have created a surface to paint on using different materials and when painting we discussed how the paint looked on each material. We used a method called dip (in the water), dab (on a tissue), dip (in the paint) to ensure our paintbrushes were ready when we wanted to change the colour we were using.  The children were also observing how the water would change to purple after cleaning red and blue paint off the brush.

Different ways to represent a number.

In Maths we have been discovering how many different ways we can represent a number. We have used dice, tens frames, counters, cubes, pictures, addition sums, number fans, numicon, just to name a few. We have had lots of practical practice using maths equipment, which meant today we were able to show our understanding on a worksheet!

Autumn

What a fabulous Autumn walk we have had! The weather was nice and dry. We found blackberries, sycamore seeds, conkers, mushrooms, rotten apples, pine cones and every colour of leaf you can imagine to name a few… We didn’t find any acorns today but if you see any out and about, bring them into school and we’ll take a look.
